Cranioplasty

1. What is Cranioplasty?

Cranioplasty repairs an opening or defect in the skull, often following brain surgery, head trauma, infection or removal of part of the skull to control brain swelling.

It may be recommended after the patient has recovered sufficiently from the original condition and the skull defect is considered suitable for reconstruction. It may also be considered for persistent skull deformity, inadequate brain protection or neurological symptoms associated with the defect.

The surgeon places a specially shaped implant or bone graft over the skull defect and securely fixes it to the surrounding bone to restore the skull's structure and contour.

Reconstruction may use the patient's own bone, titanium, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polyether ether ketone (PEEK) or other specialised materials. The choice depends on the defect, previous surgery and patient's condition.

Hospitalisation is commonly around 3–7 days, although complex cases may require longer observation. Initial recovery generally takes several weeks, with complete healing continuing over the following months.

Cranioplasty is an established reconstructive procedure, but complications can include infection, bleeding, seizures, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, implant exposure, fluid collection and the need for revision surgery. Published studies report complication rates that vary substantially according to patient condition and reconstruction material.
