Dilation and Curettage (D&C)

1. What is Dilation and Curettage (D&C)?

D&C involves gently widening the cervix and removing tissue from the uterine cavity using a curette or suction device. The tissue may be examined in a laboratory when required.

2. When is it Recommended?

D&C may be recommended for abnormal or heavy uterine bleeding, suspected abnormalities of the uterine lining, retained pregnancy tissue after miscarriage or childbirth, or certain pregnancy-related complications.

3. What Symptoms May a Patient Notice?

Depending on the underlying condition, symptoms may include heavy or prolonged vaginal bleeding, irregular menstrual bleeding, pelvic cramping or bleeding following pregnancy loss. Some patients may require D&C following an abnormal ultrasound or other investigation.

4. What Does the Treatment Involve?

The cervix is gradually opened and the doctor removes tissue from the uterine cavity using suction or specialised instruments. The procedure may be combined with hysteroscopy, which allows the doctor to directly view the inside of the uterus.

5. What Are the Main Treatment Options?

Depending on the diagnosis, alternatives may include medication, expectant management, endometrial biopsy, hysteroscopy or other surgical treatment. The appropriate approach depends on the underlying condition.

6. How Long Does Treatment & Recovery Take?

D&C commonly takes around 15–30 minutes and is usually performed as a day-care procedure. Mild cramping and light vaginal bleeding may occur for several days, with recovery generally taking a short period.

7. What Are the Important Risks or Considerations?

D&C is an established procedure. Possible complications include infection, bleeding, cervical injury, uterine perforation and, rarely, intrauterine adhesions (scar tissue). Individual risk depends on the reason for the procedure and the patient's health.
