Breast Lumpectomy

1. What is Breast Lumpectomy?

A lumpectomy removes the cancerous or suspicious breast lump together with a margin of nearby tissue, while leaving the rest of the breast intact.

2. When is it Recommended?

It may be recommended for selected patients with localised breast cancer, particularly when the tumour can be removed with clear margins while maintaining an acceptable breast shape.

3. What Symptoms May a Patient Notice?

A breast tumour may present as a new lump, change in breast shape or size, nipple discharge, nipple retraction or skin changes. Some tumours are found through screening before symptoms develop.

4. What Does the Treatment Involve?

The surgeon removes the tumour and surrounding tissue. The specimen is examined by a pathologist to determine whether the surgical margins are clear of cancer. Lymph-node assessment may also be performed when indicated.

5. What Are the Main Treatment Options?

Lumpectomy is one form of Breast Conserving Surgery (BCS). Depending on the cancer, other options may include mastectomy. Radiation therapy is commonly recommended after lumpectomy for patients who are suitable for breast-conserving treatment.

6. How Long Does Treatment & Recovery Take?

Lumpectomy is often performed as day-care or short-stay surgery, with many patients going home the same day or within 1–2 days. Recovery from the operation commonly takes 1–3 weeks, although additional cancer treatment may continue for several weeks or months.

7. What Are the Important Risks or Considerations?

Lumpectomy is an established treatment for appropriately selected breast cancer patients. Evidence shows that lumpectomy followed by appropriate radiation therapy provides long-term survival comparable to mastectomy for many early-stage breast cancers. Possible complications include infection, bleeding, changes in breast shape and the need for further surgery if the margins are not clear.
