Overview
1. What is Cervical Cancer?
Cervical cancer develops when abnormal cells in the cervix grow uncontrollably. Most cervical cancers are squamous cell carcinomas or adenocarcinomas, and persistent Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection causes almost all cervical cancers.
2. When is Treatment Recommended?
Treatment is recommended after confirming the diagnosis and determining the stage of the cancer. The treatment approach depends on how far the cancer has spread, tumour characteristics, overall health and, where relevant, fertility considerations.
3. What Symptoms May a Patient Notice?
Possible symptoms include abnormal vaginal bleeding, bleeding after sexual intercourse, unusual vaginal discharge, pelvic pain or pain during intercourse. Some patients may have no symptoms in the early stages.
4. What Does the Treatment Involve?
Treatment may involve surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted therapy. Advanced disease may require a combination of treatments.
5. What Are the Main Treatment Options?
Early-stage disease may be treated with conization, hysterectomy or fertility-sparing surgery in selected patients. More advanced disease may be treated with chemoradiation, brachytherapy and systemic therapies, depending on the stage.
6. How Long Does Treatment & Recovery Take?
Treatment duration varies considerably. Surgery may require several days of hospitalisation and several weeks of recovery, while radiation therapy with chemotherapy may continue for several weeks. Advanced or recurrent disease may require longer-term treatment.
7. What Are the Important Risks or Considerations?
Outcomes depend strongly on the stage, tumour characteristics, overall health and response to treatment. Published National Cancer Institute data report a 5-year relative survival of 91% for cervical cancer diagnosed at an early stage, 60% when it has spread to nearby tissues or lymph nodes, and 19% when it has spread to distant parts of the body. These figures are population statistics and cannot predict an individual patient's outcome.
8. Why Consider Treatment in India?
