1. What is Broken Ankle / Ankle Reconstruction?

The ankle is formed by the lower ends of the leg bones and the ankle bone. A broken ankle occurs when one or more of these bones fracture, while ankle reconstruction aims to restore the normal position and stability of a severely damaged ankle.

Treatment depends on the fracture. Surgery may be recommended when there is significant displacement, joint involvement, instability, multiple fractures or an open fracture. Severe ligament or cartilage damage may also require reconstruction.

Hospitalisation after uncomplicated ankle fracture surgery may be 1–3 days, although some procedures are performed as day-care surgery. Bone healing commonly takes around 6–12 weeks, while full recovery and return to demanding activities can take several months.

Outcomes are generally favourable when the fracture is appropriately aligned and treated. Possible complications include infection, blood clots, nerve or blood-vessel injury, delayed healing, non-union, stiffness, persistent pain and post-traumatic arthritis.
